What goes into a landed cost
Most quotes you receive cover only the freight. The doorstep number is usually 40 to 90 percent higher once duty and handling are added, which is why so many first shipments come as a shock. Here is what each line means.
Assessable value
Customs does not calculate duty on your invoice alone. It calculates on the assessable value — goods value plus freight plus insurance. That means freight is taxed too.
Basic customs duty and surcharge
BCD is charged as a percentage of assessable value and varies by HS code. A social welfare surcharge of 10 percent of the BCD is added on top.
IGST
Charged on assessable value plus BCD plus surcharge. This is often the largest single line — but if you are GST registered, it comes back to you as input tax credit, so it is a cash-flow cost rather than a real cost.
Clearance, CFS and inland
Documentation, deconsolidation at the container freight station, and transport from ICD Sanathnagar to your address. These are the charges most commonly left out of a competitor’s quote.
